Summer 2007

This “Community Collage,” currently on display at Bennett Martin Public Library, is the culminating project of a summer reading program for 4-6th graders offered through a collaboration with the Lincoln City Libraries, the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery, and the Haydon Art Center. Nineteen students met over the course of five weeks to discuss four art mysteries and do art-related activities. The students met on 5 July 2007 to discuss the book, Framed by Frank Cottrell Boyce and to work with Lincoln artist Cathy Patterson, who so generously shared her time and materials with the students. Discussing Framed and creating the collage led the students to explore the way art can positively change a community and to experience the vitality of the collaborative process.
Special thanks to:
- Cathy Patterson and Brad Krieger for their inspiring exhibition, “Collaborative Works on Paper” at the Haydon Art Center (July 2007) and their generous donation of collage pieces and the grid for the project
- Lincoln City Libraries
- the volunteers at the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery and Haydon Art Center
- the students in the book club for being such talented readers, detectives, and artists
