Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom that dates back to June 19, 1865. This is when news of the emancipation proclamation, issued by President Lincoln in January 1863, finally reached Texas. In 1980, Juneteenth officially became a Texas holiday. Recently, Juneteenth celebrations have been held throughout the country.
