The Clyde Malone Community Center will be hosting a Juneteenth event on Saturday, June 13, 2009, from 11am-5pm in Pentzer Park at North 27th and Potter Streets, (just North of the Salvation Army community center). This annual celebration attracts more than 2,000 people of all ages and backgrounds for food and live entertainment. Information on health and human services also will be available from 11am-2pm.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom that dates back to June 19, 1865. This is when news of the emancipation proclamation, issued by President Lincoln in January 1863, finally reached Texas. In 1980, Juneteenth officially became a Texas holiday. Recently, Juneteenth celebrations have been held throughout the country.
